Oct 07, 2019 (LBO) – Sri Lanka presidential rivals handed in their nomination papers for the upcoming Presidential Election.
Minister Sajith Premadasa and his main rival in elections next month, former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, handed in their poll nomination papers.
Premadasa representing New Democratic Front and Rajapakse representing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna were among the record 35 candidates who handed in their nominations to contest the 2019 Presidential election.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake handed in his nomination paper as the Presidential candidate of the National People's Power Movement and former Army Commander General Mahesh Senanayake handed in his nomination paper as the candidate of the National People’s Movement.
Chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya said they have received two objections for nominations and added that both of them were rejected.
This is the first Presidential Election in which neither the sitting President, the Prime Minister nor the Leader of the Opposition is contesting. The Presidential Election is to be held on 16 November 2019.
