Justice Minister rejects claims that US diplomat interfered with Sri Lankan Judiciary

May 13, 2019 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorale yesterday condemned the allegations made by Udaya Gammanpila in Parliament that a Legal Consultant attached to the Department of Justice in the American Embassy has interfered with the affairs of local judiciary during a workshop held in the United States.

Athukorale says these workshops were carried out in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect and Parliamentarian Gammanpila’s attempt seen as distorting information for political gain.

According to the minister, the Legal Consultant Patrick Ehlers has taken the initiative in organizing workshops and Judges comprising of two batches have been invited to US in August 2018 and April 2019 for workshops on best practices for addressing white collar criminal cases.

The government of Sri Lanka rejects and condemns the recent comments made by the Hon. Member of Parliament, Udaya Gammanpila in the Parliament on 8th May 2019, that contained baseless allegations against Sri Lanka’s independent judicial system and threats directed at a foreign diplomat. I vehemently denying his comments and such attacks are dangerous and unacceptable.
