Condemning in the strongest terms the series of heinous and cowardly terrorist attacks committed on Sunday in Sri Lanka against innocent civilians, the Commission extends its sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of all victims of these attacks.
"The inhumane attacks occurred not long after 17 April 2019, when the Government came before the Commission to present the country’s progress in advancing peacebuilding and transitional justice through strengthening democracy, good governance, and reconciliation," the Commission said.
The Peacebuilding Commission is a UN Intergovernmental advisory body of both the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council that supports peace efforts in conflict-affected countries and is a key addition to the capacity of the international community in the broad peace agenda.
The toll in a series of suicide bomb blasts on Easter Sunday targeting hotels and churches in Sri Lanka has risen to 359 adding that nine suicide bombers carried out the attacks.
The blasts have been claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group, with Sri Lanka's government pointing the finger at a local Islamist group National Thowheeth Jama'ath (NTJ), but saying the group likely had international help.
