Dec 27, 2018 (LBO) – Sri Lanka Army have rescued a number of people stranded due to the prevailing adverse weather condition in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts that experienced a heavy rainfall resulting in flooding. Army troops have commenced providing immediate rescue and relief assistance, evacuation and relocation, medical assistance, cooked meals and other assistance to the flood-affected people in these districts. According to army media, more than 230 Army personnel under the 57 Division of the SFHQ-KLN and FHQ-MLT are currently engaged in relief operations. Army troops in Mullaittivu with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy were able to rescue more than 1000 flood-victims who had been stranded in the region. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Navy extended their support towards the relief operations by deploying 06 relief teams in flood affected area. Navy relief teams have also rendered assistance to remove office supplies and peripherals from the inundated Divisional Secretariat of Kandawalai in the Kilinochchi District. At the same time, Sri Lanka Air Force has also carried out aerial reconnaissance flights over the flood-affected areas to support the ground troops engaged in relief operations. Sri Lanka Army has taken measures to protect tanks which pose a threat of breaching due to increasing water levels.

Accordingly, troops have secured the Maradamadukulam dam with sandbags after a vulnerable location was identified. The location was secured with more than 1000 bags of sand along a 40 feet distance. Heavy rain and accompanied winds had also caused many trees falling on roads disrupting vehicular movement.
