May 31, 2018 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development signed an agreement with the China Petroleum Cooperation to construct two tunnels to channel floodwater out of Colombo, yesterday.
The cost of the new project is estimated at US 322 million dollars, with part funding from the World Bank through a soft loan of US 214 million dollars and rest with government funds.
'Our flood mitigation system is over 150 years old," said Patali Champika Ranawaka, minister, Megapolis and Western Development.

“With the changes in the rain patterns and the rainfall doubling it is important that we develop our systems."
He said that the project will help the country to cope with a rainfall of up to 529mm.
The two tunnels which are scheduled to be completed by 2020 will see the first tunnel running through Bauddhaloka Mawatha and used to channel the flood water from the Thummulla area while the second will be constructed through Nawamuthuwella.
the minister added that a proper multipurpose project should be designed for Kelani River to mitigate the flood threat to Colombo city where the water in the river should be channeled to the dry zone areas.
