Nov 15, 2017 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Supreme Court today granted compensation and cost amounting to 800, 000 rupees to a British tourist, on the basis of the petitioner’s fundamental rights to freedom from torture, the right to equality and freedom from arbitrary arrest been infringed.
The court ordered that the Sri Lankan state should pay her 700,000 rupees as compensation and her legal costs while two policemen who arrested her were ordered to pay 50,000 each.
The Supreme Court judgement said it very clear that the magistrate had given an illegal order.
Naomi Coleman, was arrested at Sri Lanka's Bandaranayake International Airport for having Lord Budha tattoo on her upper arm, in 2014. She was detained by police a later deported.
