Central Bank extends freeze on TRO bank accounts to investigate alleged tiger links

Sept 06 (LBO) – The Central Bank said Wednesday it would extend a freeze on all bank accounts of the charity, Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) by six months to investigate alleged terrorist links, following an order from Sri Lanka’s High Court.

All banking transactions of the TRO were suspended over the weekend, freezing 75 million Sri Lankan rupees (750,000 dollars) held in local commercial banks, using newly enacted laws against terrorist financing.

A court order issued on Monday upheld the action by the Central Bank and allowed the suspension to be extended so that charges could be investigated.

œThe suspension of the TRO accounts has been extended for a period of 6 months in order that the necessary inquiries concerning all transactions could be made, as well as to permit the authorities to consult and advise the relevant law enforcement agencies with regard to the inquiries presently being carried out in this regard, the Central Bank said in a statement.

The TRO is active in the North and East of the country in areas controlled by the Tamil Tigers, and authorities said the asset freeze was prompted by raids on overseas offices of TRO by law enforcement agencies elsewhere.
