Sri Lanka Cricket captain Mathews resigns amidst losing streak
July 12, 2017 (LBO) – Sri Lanka Cricket captain Angelo Mathews has tendered his resignation amid the national team experiencing a losing streak.
Sri Lanka Cricket today called a special press conference to announce the new positions.
Dinesh Chandimal has been appointed as the new Test Captain while Upul Tharanga has been appointed as the ODI and T20 Captain.
“This was not an easy decision mainly not due to the fact that we lost, but I feel this is the right time to step down,” Mathews told reporters.
“My honest opinion is that there are candidates that can take over the reins and I’m sure they will be better captains than me.”
Sri Lanka lost a five-match home ODI series 3–2 against Zimbabwe and Matthews called the defeat "one of the lowest points" of his career.
Mathews captaincy record includes 34 Tests with 13 wins and 15 defeats, 98 ODIs with 47 wins and 45 defeats, 11 T20s with 4 wins 7 defeats.
