May 30, 2017 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's official flood death toll rose to 177 on Monday as the island sought international assistance.
High Commissioners and Ambassadors from the United Kingdom, United States and Japan met with the newly appointed Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake and pledged their support in various forms of relief aid.
Japan had promised portable electricity generators and a team of experts to help with the relief work, the ministry said issuing a statement.
The US and the UK have also said that they will help with the relief operations.
Two Indian naval ships with supplies arrived over the weekend with a third expected to arrive during the week.
The United Nations said it would donate water containers, water purification tablets and tarpaulins while the World Health Organization will support medical teams in affected areas.
China issuing a statement has already pledged USD 2.2 million dollars in aid.
Pakistan and several other countries had also offered help.
The flooding is the worst since May 2003, when 250 people were killed and 10,000 homes destroyed after a similarly powerful monsoon.
All schools in flood-hit areas, including the capital Colombo, will be closed for a week.

The meteorological department said it is forecasting more rain in the next two days.
