Mar 23, 2017 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Parliament was informed Thursday that the government paid around 150 million rupees as monthly rent for buildings occupied by ministries for the 12 months ended September 2016.

After the 2015 August election, the Parliament approved appointment of 48 cabinet ministers to the National Government.
As per the details revealed by Chief Government Whip Gayantha Karunathilaka, during the period from 1st September 2015 to 1st October 2016, the amount paid as advances for rented buildings alone was over 1,007 million rupees.
Most ministries have permanent buildings as well as rented buildings inside Colombo city and Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte.
The Agriculture Ministry has the most expensive, which is still unoccupied, with 25 million rupees paid as rent every month.
SLFP General Secretary and Agriculture Minister Duminda Dissanayake recently admitted that his ministry paidthis amount since April 2016 for the new building in Rajagiriya.
The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs occupies a building that pays 14 million rupees a month.
Twelve million rupees has been paid monthly for the Ministry of Regional Development which is a new ministry controlled by Minister Sarath Fonseka.
The Ministry of Social Empowerment and Welfare paid 12 million rupees monthly as rent while the Health Ministry has paid 10 million rupees for their rented building.
Ministry of Plantation Industries headed by Navin Dissanayake needs to pay seven million rupees each month.
Over 80 million rupees has been spent for these six ministries alone as monthly rent.
