Feb 27, 2017 (LBO) – Moonlight won the best picture award at the Oscars after La La Land was mistakenly awarded the honor, baffling viewers around the world.
In a historical mix-up, Faye Dunaway named La La Land as the best picture at the Dolby theatre even though few minutes later La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz declared the real winner as Moonlight.
It appeared veteran actors Dunaway and Warren Beatty mixed-up an envelope containing a card naming a previous award won by La La Land and Dunaway went ahead naming La La Land.
“I’d never seen that happen before. It made a special feeling more special but not in the way I expected,” Moonlight’s director Barry Jenkins said after the event.
“The last 20 minutes of my life have been insane, beyond life changing.”
Casey Affleck won the award for actor in a leading role for Manchester by the Sea while Emma Stone won the actress in a leading role award for La La Land.
La La Land also won the best direction, cinematography and music awards while Zootopia won the best animated feature film.
Mahershala Ali grabbed actor in a supporting role award for Moonlight while the female award was bagged by Viola Davis for Fences.
Best adapted screenplay went to Moonlight while the original screenplay award was grabbed by Manchester by the Sea. Best foreign language film was The Salesman.
