Sri Lanka’s Eswaran Brothers wins Gold for environmental best practices
Dec 01, 2016 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's tea company Eswaran Brothers Exports has won the Gold Award for environmental best practices at London’s Green Apple Environment Awards, ranking alongside companies like IKEA and Toshiba for its commitment to the environment.
"It's an honour to be recognised for the work that we are doing with the environment. Six years ago, we set out to be the most sustainable tea company in the world, and we want to ensure that we keep striving towards this goal," Chairman of Eswaran Brothers, D. Eassuwaren said.
The Green Apple Awards is hosted by the Green Organization, a nonprofit committed to promoting environmental best practices, and is supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
In 2010, Eswaran Brothers became the world’s first CarbonNeutral® Tea Company by offsetting the carbon footprint of their operations and having conducted the island's first Organizational & Product Water Footprint Assessment. They were also the first in the world to introduce a certified carbon negative tea product.
Competing against more than 500 other nominations, the company was presented their trophy and certificate at a ceremony in the Houses of Parliament, London held on 11th of November.
The company has been invited to have their winning paper published in The Green Book, the international work of reference on environmental best practice, so that others can learn from their achievement.
Eswaran Brothers Exports have also been invited to represent Sri Lanka at the European Business Awards for the Environment.
