Sri Lanka approves two wind power plants in Chunnakam

Dec 01, 2016 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's cabinet has given the approval to award tenders establish two wind power plants of 10 megawatts each in Chunnakam. "The government has paid its attention on generating a larger portion of electricity requirement by renewable energy sources and it is proposed to establish solar and wind power plants," the latest statement on approved cabinet decisions said. The proposal was brought by Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, minister of power and renewable energy, to award tenders to establish two wind power plants of 10 Mw each in Chunnakam, as recommended by the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee.

Sri Lanka's current installed power capacity is 3,900MW and it is expected that total installed capacity would increase to 4,955 MW by the year 2020. As per the CEB’s forecast Sri Lanka’s electricity demand is expected to grow at 5.3 percent on average during 2015 – 2034 period, in addition the peak demand is expected to grow at 4.7 percent on average.
