Nov 17, 2016 (LBO) –Sri Lanka’s state-owned water supplier has warned that it may suffer from a loss of 9 billion rupees next year if the proposed tariff increase was not granted.
Water Supply Minister Rauff Hakeem told reporters in Colombo that the Sri Lanka Water Board is not currently a loss making institution.
“But with recent salary increases and other due bills this institution will be converted to a loss making institution by next year,” Minister Hakeem said.

“We are doing this tariff increase to prevent that happening.”
Minister Hakeem said that water bills were increased four years ago but all overheads have increased during this time.
He said to clean and supply one cubic meter of water to a household the Board has to bear around 48 rupees.
President Maithripala Sirisena however recently appointed a three-member committee to look into whether the proposed water tariff increase of 30 percent is justifiable or not.
“If we consider that request we may also need a support from the treasury.” Minister Hakeem further said.
