Sri Lanka’s March inflation dips

Mar. 31 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's annualised inflation eased to 9.6 percent in the twelve months to March from 10.3 percent in February, despite price hikes in the sales of firewood, sugar, meat and milk tea, the Census & Statistics Dept said Friday. The twelve month moving average is usually taken as the official inflation figure by the government.

During the month prices of bread, wheat flour, sugar, condensed milk, milk tea, dried chillies, pepper, garlic, fresh butter, beef, pork, fresh fish, dried fish and firewood rose during this month.

However, there were decline in prices of rice, tamarind, limes, red onions, coconuts, eggs and most varieties of Vegetables.

"These price decreases can be mainly attributed to more supply of locally produced agricultural consumer goods, specially the Vegetables to the main markets in Colombo City," the statement said.

As a result the Colombo consumer price index fell to 4209.0 in March from 4290.5 in February.
