Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, however, said that the Airport Authority of India has carried out a feasibility study on the Palali airport. He said the approval and observation of the Cabinet and the Attorney-General is not needed for a feasibility study. “The government including the relevant ministries were fully aware of that feasibility study,” Wickremesinghe emphasized. “There is no need to get the cabinet approval or such a thing for a feasibility study.” Previous regime initially planned to develop the Palali airstrip in Jaffna as an international airport, mainly to cater to Indian traffic and sought Indian assistance. A few months ago, a team from the Airport Authority of India had visited Palali to ascertain how the airport could be developed as a regional airport, government officials said.
