China to set up canned fish, gem and jewelry firms in Hambantota

Aug 16, 2016 (LBO) - Chinese firms have shown keen interest in setting up tinned fish, and gem and jewellery enterprises in a proposed special industrial zone close to Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port.





“A Sri Lankan delegation led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has held talks with China’s Chongqing Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Company which has shown interest in developing Hambantota,” a statement released following the PM official visit to China said.

Chongqing Group Chairman Yu Yang said his company is ready to set up an industrial zone in southern Hambantota.



“Chinese firms want to set up tinned fish and gem and jewellery enterprises and export goods warehousing in the industrial zone.

” Chinese officials are in discussions with the Sri Lankan government to secure 15,000 acres of land for a special investment zone. The Sri Lankan Government is currently assessing potential land for the venture.
