May 25, 2016 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved establishment of an independent institution as office on missing persons by a Parliament Act with the view to search for and trace missing persons.
The cabinet proposal made by Prime Minister will identify appropriate mechanisms and submit recommendations to authorities to take measures on missing persons while protecting the rights of missing persons and their relatives.
The office on missing persons will identify channels through which relief can be obtained.
The office will also collect data related to missing persons obtained by government institutions and other institutions and centralize all available data within its database.
There have been strong requests for providing true information on disappeared or missing persons to their relatives to know their actual fate.
It will enable such families to be reunited or to have closure with regard to such disappearance and be granted with reparations and other relief and support.
