Sri Lanka to build LNG power plant in Kerawalapitiya: Power Ministry

May 06, 2016 (LBO) – Sri Lanka will build a new 300MW Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) power plant in Kerawalapitiya adjoining the existing power plant there, the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy said. "The plant will be built on a 10 acre land in Kerawalapitiya utilizing LNG which minimizes environmental pollution," the ministry said in a statement.

Existing thermal power plants too will be converted to LNG plants where feasible, the statement said. Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya was on a visit to the Kerawalapitiya Power Plant with senior officials of the ministry when he announced this decision. LNG has become significantly cheaper in the last year, and many countries have begun switching their power plants to LNG. Sri Lanka too has accepted the value of LNG over alternatives such as coal, the head of the Petroleum Resources Development Secretariat told Lanka Business Online Thursday, which is tied to the country's plans to utilize its own natural gas resources.
